India vs Australia Live Score, 2nd ODI: Marauding SKY takes spotlight as India eye 400

September 24, 2023

India vs Australia 2nd ODI Live Score: KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav have continued to punish the bowlers after centurions Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer fell.

India vs Australia Live Score, 2nd ODI: Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill pummelled splendid centuries as India knocked the stuffing out of Australia in the 2nd ODI at Indore's Holkar Stadium. First, Iyer creamed a fine century - the third of his ODI career before cramps and fatigue got the better of him. Despite getting a reprieve, Iyer perished for 105 but not before adding a 200-run partership with Gill, who not too long after, completed the 6th century of his ODI career but perished soon after.

After Australia stand-in captain Steve Smith won the toss and opted to bowl against India, Josh Hazlewood struck in his second over to dismiss Ruturaj Gaikwad cheaply. Iyer, walking in at 3, started briskly, smashing four boundaries in 11 balls and brought up the fifty partnership with Gill in just 29 deliveries. With India reaching 79/1 in 9.5 overs, rain stopped play, but fortunately, it did not last long as bright sunshine returned in no time.

The clock is ticking as the World Cup draws near. India have been consistently impressive in every aspect, and the outcome of the first ODI against Australia on Friday further exemplifies their proficiency. With the series still up for grabs and considering their current form and the outcome of the Mohali game, India finds itself with an excellent opportunity to establish an unassailable 2-0 lead today in the 2nd ODI at Indore.

However, more importantly, this is the final opportunity for players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav to make a lasting impression before the return of senior players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Kuldeep Yadav for India's last official match before the World Cup. Shreyas, in particular, is eager to find his form after missing out on a flat track in the previous match. Designated as India's number 4, Shreyas' fitness was a topic of discussion during the Asia Cup, and he has been unable to spend significant time at the crease due to various reasons. A back spasm kept him out of the business end of the Asia Cup, and an unfortunate run-out ended his brief 8-ball stay in the center. Shreyas hopes to score big in the upcoming two games to boost his confidence and that of his team leading into the global event.

Ashwin made a tidy bowling comeback but struggled to trouble Australian batters on a flat track. He couldn't generate much turn, and his flatter deliveries were easily dealt with by the opposition. While the champion spinner still has a chance to make a last-minute entry into India's World Cup squad if Axar Patel isn't fit in time, the team management expects more from the 37-year-old than what he delivered.

India managed to secure a comfortable victory in the first ODI, even in the absence of four top-tier players, including skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. They now stand in good stead to clinch the series at the Holkar Stadium, known for producing high-scoring encounters. After enduring unusual heat and humidity in Mohali, the players will welcome the respite brought by recent rain, which has lowered the temperature. While the previous game had several positives for India, notably the performances of Mohammad Shami and Suryakumar Yadav, there are still some questions that need answering as the World Cup approaches in early October.

Australia, like India, was missing key players in the opening match, including Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell, and Josh Hazlewood. Captain Pat Cummins hinted that they might be ready by the third game in Rajkot on September 27. Australia had previously won a series in India earlier this year but now finds themselves in a must-win situation on Sunday. While Josh Inglis showed promise with a run-a-ball 45, the middle-order needs to find more consistency.

Here are some pointers regarding 2nd ODI between India and Australia:

- Shubman Gill scored his 6th ODI century and the fifth of this year.

- Shreyas Iyer notched up his 3rd ODI century before departing for 105.

- Rain stopped play with India on 79/1 in 9.5 overs. Shreyas Iyer unbeaten on 34 and Gill 32.

- Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill added a rampant fifty-run stand off just 29 balls.

- Josh Hazlewood dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad cheaply to give Australia an arlybreakthrough.

- With Pat Cummins rested, Australia stand-in captain Steve Smith won the toss and opted to bowl.

- India are without Jasprit Bumrah, who has been rested for the 2nd ODI but will return for the final game on Wednesday.

- The 2nd ODI at Indore is being looked at as a high-scoring contest given the short boundaries of the Holkar Stadium.

Sri Lanka To Dedicate Third Bangladesh ODI To Nuwan Kulasekara

Sri Lanka will dedicate Wednesday's third one-day international against Bangladesh to fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara who recently announced his retirement from international cricket. Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement on Monday it would invite the bowler to witness the game at the R. Premadasa Stadium, and arrange a ceremony to honour him for services he had rendered for the country's cricket. "Nuwan Kulasekara has been a vital cog in the Lankan lineup and played exceptional cricket during his time with the national team," said Shammi Silva, President of the SLC.
Kulasekara made his Sri Lanka debut with an ODI against England in 2003 and played a key part in Sri Lanka's T20 Men's World Cup victory in 2014.
He was a vital member of the Sri Lanka team, who entered the 2011 Men's Cricket World Cup final against India, and was the top-ranked bowler in the ICC ODI rankings for over six months in 2009.
He played last of 184 ODIs against Zimbabwe in July 2017 and was not selected in any of the format since then.
Last week star Sri Lankan bowler Lasith Malinga retired after the first match of the series against Bangladesh.
Sri Lanka lead the three-match series 2-0, thanks to 91-run and seven-wicket win in the first two matches.
Bangladesh will wear black armbands in the third game to pay respect to the country's first captain Shamim Kabir.
Kabir, who led the national team against an international opponent in their first match against MCC in January 1977, died of cancer on Monday.

BAN 238/8 (50.0)

SL 242/3 (44.4)

Sri Lanka won by 7 wkts

Dimuth Karunaratne seems to be the crisis man for Sri Lanka. Became the Test captain out of nowhere this year and led them to a historical series win in SA, then similarly found himself as the ODI captain before the World Cup. The team didn't make the knockouts but still did decently well with their squad strength. And now, the drought of a home series win is broken under his leadership in his first series in Sri Lanka. Happy times for the Lankans as they look to rebuild towards the next World Cup. Bangladesh have been poor in both the games, especially during vital moments. Certainly need a kick up their backsides. That's it from us today then. Do join us for the next game between the two sides. It might be a dead rubber technically but it's dedicated to Nuwan Kulasekara who has retired recently. The Lankans will want to win that for him. Until next time, this is Hari Sadanandan signing off on behalf of Abhinand Raghavendran and Siva MD. Cheers and goodnight!
Dimuth Karunaratne, winning captain: We did really well and it was on our minds that we hadn't won at home in a long time. It was challenging against Bangladesh but we did really well. We wanted to bat first but that's how things go. Bowlers did a good job and put their hands up. Akila came after a long time to the team and did really well. Did his job perfectly of keeping the pressure. Avishka was told to play freely as we knew that the wicket will turn more as the innings progresses. Unfortunate that he couldn't get his hundred, hopefully he will do it in the future.
Tamim Iqbal, losing captain: We won an important toss because we knew that the pitch will spin later on. We added a spinner for the same reason. I did tell at the toss that we needed to start well but losing four wickets early didn't help. Not a 300 kind of pitch but at least 260 would have been a good score. The way we bowled today, I doubt if even 300 would have been enough. We had our moments in both the games but we just aren't ready to do the hard work to push ourselves across the line.
Avishka Fernando, Man of the Match: I don't mind batting at the top or at number three. Happy to bat anywhere for the team. I am disappointed to not get to the three-figure mark and hopefully, I can convert my starts into bigger knocks in the future. The track was a bit slow and also spun a bit. I am glad that I was able to make a contribution.
Angelo Mathews: We haven't been playing very good cricket over the past couple of years. It's been disappointing, we have disappointed the fans. But, they have turned out in numbers, thank them for backing us all the way and coming to watch us play We (Mathews and Mendis) were just talking that we have a lot of time. We just had to get in and get set. The wicket wasn't easy, it was turning quite a lot and stopping for the seamers. Credit to Bangladesh, they put us under a lot of pressure. It was a tough wicket to bat on. Kusal played brilliantly after Avishka's brilliant knock.
21:54 Local Time, 16:24 GMT, 21:54 IST: Another clinical performance from the Lankans. 238 wasn't a challenging total but certainly workable on a pitch that had some help for the spinners and those who took pace off. Bangladesh's bowlers weren't accurate enough though, and their spinners were too inconsistent to make use of the surface. Take no credit away from the Lankans as Fernando's blistering innings set the game up nicely for the hosts, so well that even a couple of quick wickets didn't really hurt them. Mathews and Mendis put their heads down to take their side past the finish line. Bangladesh's fielding was also shoddy, which only made matters worse, given the inadequate performance from their bowlers. Consecutive defeats and both really hurting ones at that, Bangladesh will be stinging for sure. On the other hand, Sri Lanka will be jubilant as it's been a long drought in white-ball cricket for them.
44.4
Sabbir Rahman to Mathews, FOUR, first ODI series win at home for SL in 44 months! That's a long wait really but it's finally come. Mathews finishes it off with a positive blow over mid-on, clean strike and it's double whammy for him as he gets to his 50 as well
44.3
Sabbir Rahman to Mathews, no run, flatter and shorter on off, Mathews punches from the crease to cover
44.2
Sabbir Rahman to Mathews, FOUR, smashed away! Another long hop from Sabbir and Mathews capitalizes on it this time. Sits back and mauls the pull over mid-wicket. Nobody in the deep
44.1
Sabbir Rahman to Mathews, no run, tossed up really full on off, dug out back to Sabbir

South Africa capitulate post de Kock belligerence

March 06, 2019
The last five SA batsmen all managed single-digit scores as the hosts folded with 29 deliveries to spare. South Africa threw away a blistering start to the second ODI against Sri Lanka, folding for a middling 251 despite setting themselves up for a total in excess of 300 on a fine batting surface at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. Quinton de Kock smashed a rapid 70-ball 94 and then smashed his bat in anger in the dressing room, but even he wouldn't have foreseen the capitulation that followed as South Africa lost their last six wickets for 31 runs on Wednesday (March 6).

Thisara Perera orchestrated the collapse by first denying de Kock's century and then followed that with the wickets of Rassie van der Dussen and the other half-centurion Faf du Plessis. Dhananjaya de Silva and Lasith Malinga picked up two wickets apiece.
Malinga elected to field but would have questioned his decision several times over as de Kock wreaked havoc on his fellow fast bowlers even as he kept Reeza Hendricks tied down. Vishwa Fernando was at the receiving end of some preferential treatment as the southpaw capitalised on the full and wide deliveries to pepper the cover boundary with four boundaries in the second over. The early assault forced Malinga to replace Fernando with offie Dhananjaya. But the conventional wisdom of the away spinner stood no chance against de Kock in this mood.
The keeper-batsman raced to a half-century off 36 deliveries, with 48 of his runs coming through boundaries. By the 10th over, the hosts had motored along to 75 for no-loss. It was after the PowerPlay that Sri Lanka began finding their way back into the contest. Akila Dananjaya and Kasun Rajitha put a lid on the scoring over the next four-and-a-half overs, a crucial period of play in the context of the game with the openers managing just 16 runs. Hendricks, in particular, had been scoring at a rate of 70 meaning a get-out-of-jail shot was always coming.
Malinga, always a shrewd operator, bowled a short ball - about the first such delivery attempted on the day - and elicited a top-edge that was gobbled up at fine leg. Perera then came on to the attack and struck a hammer blow in his second over. De Kock closed his bat face early attempting a flick and saw the ball land in the keeper's gloves via his leading edge. One brought two as van der Dussen dragged a short and wide delivery to deep-midwicket.
Wiaan Mulder began his innings with four successive boundaries off Rajitha before bizarrely losing his leg stump after missing an attempted flick of Fernando. Du Plessis kept one end going and followed his century in the first game with a half-century in this one. But soon after getting to 5,000 ODI runs, he was cleaned up by a Perera delivery that kept low.
Andile Phehlukwayo, who came in for Dwaine Pretorius, didn't do his case any good with an ungainly cut shot as South Africa imploded. The last five batsmen all managed single-digit scores as the hosts folded with 29 deliveries to spare.
Brief scores: South Africa 251 in 45.1 overs (Quinton de Kock 94, Faf du Plessis 57; Thisara Perera 3-26, Lasith Malinga 2-39) vs Sri Lanka

WATCH: MS Dhoni nearly pulls off an unbelievable catch of Peter Handscomb during India vs Australia 2nd ODI

March 06, 2019

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was once again at his usual best behind the stumps during the second ODI between India and Australia and almost pulled off a stunning catch of Peter Handscomb.

MS Dhoni nearly pulled off a stunner during 2nd ODI between India and Australia MS Dhoni's unparalleled experience coupled with his sharp brain makes him one of the most shrewd tacticians in the game of cricket. There have been many instances over the years where Dhoni has shown that his precision, anticipation and decision making is one of the best. On Tuesday, Dhoni's genius was once again on display when the veteran wicket-keeper almost pulled off a nearly impossible catch in the second ODI between India and Australia.
The incident happened in the 33rd over of the match when Peter Handscomb was facing the unpredictable Kedar Jadhav. The right-hander went for a paddle sweep using little power in his shot. Dhoni had already anticipated the shot from behind the stumps and moved towards his left to almost pull off a stunner. However, the ball slipped from his gloves and India were denied a wicket. It could have been a sensational grab if taken.
While Dhoni was at his usual best behind the stumps, he also helped Kohli towards the end of the Australian innings and constantly kept advising the Indian captain on who to bowl when. Kohli in the post-match presentation admitted that he had thought of letting Vijay Shankar bowl the 46th over and save the remaining two overs each of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami for last. However, a discussion with Rohit Sharma and Dhoni made him change his mind.
"I was thinking about the 46th over (to go with Kedar/Shankar). I was talking with both of them (Rohit and Dhoni). If they (Bumrah and Shami) take wickets, we'll be right in the game and that's exactly what happened," Kohli said in the post-match presentation.
After Kohli's 40th ODI hundred helped India post a respectable total of 250 runs on the board, the bowlers did a tremendous job to restrict Australia on 242 runs. Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for India with his three wickets but it was Shankar, who stole the show with his match-winning last over as he conceded only two runs and took two wickets while defending 11 runs. India now have a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Australia and South Africa will resume their rivalry on Sunday when the two teams will face each other in the first of the three ODI matches of the series. This is the first series that these two teams will be playing after the ball-tampering saga that took place in Newlands during the third Test of the series earlier this year. The action of Cameron Bancroft saw him being banned along with Steven Smith and David Warner, whose services will be missed by Australia for the next five months more.
Australia look a weakened side in their absence and under a new captain, Aaron Finch, Kangaroos will have a steep task. Finch has had led the team in past in ODIs but this is the first time when he will lead Australia as a full-time captain. He wil be opening the innings without his regular partner Warner.  The Australian skipper did not reveal the playing XI during the pre-match presser; thus leaving everyone guessing. In their previous ODI series, which came under Tim Paine, Australia were whitewashed in the five ODIs.
South Africa recently whitewashed Zimbabwe in the three-match ODI series which was an ideal practice for them ahead of the big series against Australia. They kicked off the tour well with a win against Prime Minister’s XI by a margin of four wickets and are expected to defeat Australia at their home. The team wil miss out on the services of JP Duminy and Hashim Amla, who are not a part of the series due to respective injuries.

Identity crisis awaits Australia in its curious home run

November 03, 2018
Australia and South Africa are set to renew their cricketing rivalry that had gone missing after the Newlands ball-tampering fiasco
There's never an urn at stake, or the odds of a billion people ganging up against you in cricket's naked dance of the riches, but the adrenaline is forever in attendance whenever these two take each other on, manically surging up to woo the cricket romantic in you. South Africa and Australia aren't cricket's best couple ever but, quite astonishingly, they make the best kids. "Australia is our favourite team to play against," Faf du Plessis admitted recently.

And so here they return, with a short three-match ODI series that reeks of inadequacy, to replenish their cricketing rivalry that had gone missing after the Newlands ball-tampering fiasco. The first ODI at Perth on Sunday (November 4) will be the first time Australia play at home since then, and it adds an interesting dynamic to a series that's being played in the backdrop of the Longstaff cultural review: which Australia will turn up against South Africa after all?
It's an interesting identity crisis to have. While decades of faulty conditioning, and more importantly in a ratifying winning culture, is bound to leave some residue -- "that culture from years back is going to be hard to crack," Dale Steyn has said -- the world now also stands "woke", allowing Australia little room to goof up and redefine the line, again. But a less pompous Australia can be an unrealised broadcaster's nightmare; you can't invest USD. 1.2 billion and afford to see failed attempts at marking out aggression from infidelity by someone who's grown up believing that the two are one and the same. And what will South Africa, head over heels in love with Australia, and publicly so, do? Nobody wants to fight a rival on morphine. Not Sherlock Holmes. Not Professor Moriarty. And definitely not South Africa.
Starting the first ODI, the series is unfailingly going to be a journey about self-discovery: for Australia, who will need to respond to a raucous home crowd they have let down, and who will still be willing to go to war to defend them. With 14 losses in their last 16 ODIs, Australia don't know how to win without wanting to win at all costs yet, and having a new captain in Aaron Finch, who will be taking over from Tim Paine, can be the impetus they need to take themselves off the beaten path - culturally or otherwise.
South Africa, without Hashim Amla and JP Duminy, lost their practice match in an ominous start to the tour, suggesting that this isn't their best batting unit taking on Australia, who themselves are volatile in the absence of David Warner and Steven Smith. Thankfully, there's Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada and Lungisani Ngidi racing against counterparts Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood in what will be yet another instalment in cricket's generational debate about the best bowling attack. And what better time than seven months before the World Cup to go one-nil up.
The series, which can be differently billed as Australia's chance at redeeming the 5-0 whitewash in 2016, isn't going to set a house on fire, but cricket will take comfort in the firebox on offer in exchange, maybe.
What: Australia vs South Africa, 1st ODI at 11:20 AM local
Where: Perth Stadium
What to expect: A sunny day with a high of 21 degree Celsius forecast. The venue has hosted just the one ODI, against England in January, where Andrew Tye and Tom Curran picked five-wicket hauls. With two showstopping fast bowling sides, expect some good pace and bounce in the wicket.
Team news:
Australia: Shaun Marsh, who looked a bit knackered against Pakistan but scored two hundreds in England earlier in the year, will bat one-down and will have to be among the runs, as Shane Warne argued recently. Aaron Finch and D'Arcy Short are set to be the openers, with Alex Carey the designated the wicketkeeper after Australia let go of Paine to focus on Test cricket.
There are only two places available for Glenn Maxwell, Chris Lynn and Travis Head in the middle-order and it'll be interesting to see Australia's picks. Legspinner Adam Zampa might be preferred over Ashton Agar's left-arm spin, whereas the pace trio of Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins will be supported by the seam-bowling all-round capabilities of Marcus Stoinis.
Probable XI: Aaron Finch (c), D'Arcy Short, Shaun Marsh, Chris Lynn, Travis Head/Glenn Maxwell, Alex Carey (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood
South Africa: No Hashim Amla means that Aiden Markram, who impressed with 47 in the warm-up game, will open alongside Quinton de Kock. David Miller, also among the runs in the warm-up game, will hold the middle-order with Faf du Plessis, who had limited game-time in the Zimbabwe series because of his limited shoulder problem.
Chris Morris and Farhaan Behardien return to the ODI squad, while Reeza Hendricks should get an extended run to nail down the No. 3 spot. Given the pace bowlers at their disposal and on a Perth wicket, expect only one legspinner in Imran Tahir to play.
Probable XI: Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Faf du Plessis (c), David Miller, Farhaan Behardien, Chris Morris, Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Lungisani Ngidi, Imran Tahir
Did you know:
- Australia have won only six out of the 25 ODIs they played since January 2017. Their win percentage of 24.00 is only ahead of Sri Lanka's 23.91 in this period.
- Since January 2017, Australia and South Africa average the highest for the opening wicket in ODIs [SA: 55.53 and AUS: 55.32]
- Imran Tahir is one wicket away from 150 ODI wickets. If he gets to the milestone in this first ODI against Australia, he will be the fourth-fastest overall and joint-fastest for South Africa to get there.
What they said:
"If we can follow our process and do our basics well enough, winning will start taking care of itself. If you start looking at the end result purely, that's when you can make some errors in judgement and fall down that way" - Aaron Finch isn't intimated by Australia's poor showing in ODIs of late.
"The results have not been as good as they would have liked, but from our point of view it's really important you look at Australia as a team they when there's a clash between Australia and South Africa it's always a tough one" - Faf du Plessis, despite Australia's form, isn't taking a win for granted.
